The Vintage Course – Mission Hills Haikou China

Course Architect

Brian Curley · Schmit-Curley Design

The Vintage is based on the traditional courses constructed at the start of the 20th century. On the one hand, the layout has a really natural vibe to it, with holes thoughtfully placed on the already-formed topography to preserve the heavily wooded area as much as possible. Simultaneously, a large portion of the feature work makes use of peculiar, occasionally geometric shapes and quirky, distinctly ancient elements. Reputable golf courses like Garden City, Maidstone, the National Golf Links, Fishers Island, and Chicago Golf Club were contributed to for the design of this course.

Striking, abrupt mounds, deep pots, square edges, ridges, blind shots, and long, thin bunkers next to both small and large greens with wicker basket pins are common features of the natural terrain that contrast with one another. In contrast to the numerous cookie-cutter modern courses that predominate in golf today, these features pay homage to the handiwork of the past and offer a pleasant change of pace. With lots of elbow room and dense vegetation, the course spans around 250 acres and offers a core golf experience that is easy to walk.
