The Mines Golf Course, the focal point of a resort complex spanning 1,000 acres and five million square feet of internal space, was constructed on the site of the world’s largest open cast tin mine. The Mines golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. since the property was in such terrible shape that many people believed development was not feasible. In order to stabilize the land and rehabilitate the soil, Trent Jones had to undertake extensive re-engineering. Because of this, the fairways have a foot of sand lining them, which acts as a buffer against contaminated soil and offers superior drainage, particularly during the periodic monsoon rains.
